Tratto vs SendGrid: where the data lives, and where SendGrid is ahead.

Tratto is a transactional and marketing email API that stores contacts, email records and event data in EU regions on every plan, the free one included. Twilio SendGrid sends through a global infrastructure by default; its EU data residency is included only with the Pro and Premier packages and works through a dedicated EU subuser. SendGrid is ahead on track record, SMTP, inbound email, dedicated IPs and email validation.

SendGrid figures come from twilio.com/en-us/sendgrid/pricing, Twilio's post "How to Send Emails with Twilio SendGrid on EU Servers" (15 July 2025) and the SendGrid documentation on twilio.com, read on 13 October 2026. If they have changed, the table is wrong, not them: write to [email protected]. On Tratto, each recipient (to, cc or bcc) counts as one email.

The difference that matters: where the data lives

“Before, when you sent an email through Twilio SendGrid, it was handled by our global API. That meant your email and the data it generates is processed through our global infrastructure and stored in data centers around the world.”

SendGrid now offers EU data residency: emails sent through its EU API are processed in the EU, and recipient data and email event data are stored in EU-based systems. The same post sets two conditions: it is included with the Pro and Premier packages, and it works through a subuser created for the EU region, because the parent account cannot send in the EU. On Tratto there is no EU option to switch on: every plan, the free one included, stores and sends in EU regions of Google Cloud and AWS, both US-headquartered companies, each named with its region on the sub-processors page.

Where SendGrid is ahead

Track record and scale: SendGrid is one of the longest-running email APIs, with official libraries in seven languages; Tratto is in private beta, with SDKs for Node.js, Python and PHP. SMTP and inbound: SendGrid has an SMTP relay and an Inbound Parse webhook; both are on Tratto's roadmap. Dedicated IPs and email validation come with SendGrid's Pro plan; Tratto has neither today.

When to choose which

Choose SendGrid if you need SMTP, inbound email, dedicated IPs or email validation today, or a provider with a long record at very high volume, and either global data storage is acceptable to you or you are on Pro or Premier with an EU subuser.

Choose Tratto if you want EU data storage from the first email, without a Pro plan or a separate subuser, and transactional email, campaigns and automation flows in one API, with 3,000 emails a month on the free plan.

Questions

Does SendGrid store data in the EU?
Only with its EU data residency, which Twilio includes with the Pro and Premier packages: emails sent from an EU subuser through the EU API (api.eu.sendgrid.com) are processed in the EU, and recipient data and email event data are stored in EU-based systems. Otherwise email goes through SendGrid's global infrastructure, with data stored in data centers around the world.
What does EU data residency cost on SendGrid?
It is included with Pro, from $89.95 a month for 100,000 emails, and with Premier, priced on request. On Tratto every plan stores data in the EU, Free included.
How do the free plans compare?
SendGrid's Free Trial is 100 emails a day for 60 days. Tratto Free is 3,000 emails a month with 3 custom domains, with no end date.
Can I move from SendGrid to Tratto without changing code?
No. Tratto has its own REST API and SDKs for Node.js, Python and PHP, and no SMTP relay yet, so switching means changing the client code. Inbound email is not available yet either.
