Tratto vs Postmark: where the data lives, and where Postmark is ahead.

Tratto is a transactional and marketing email API that stores and sends everything in the EU. Postmark is a transactional email service with years of track record, whose primary data and servers are in the United States and which has no plans for EU servers. Postmark is ahead on traffic separation, inbound email, SMTP and paperwork; Tratto keeps the data in EU regions and puts campaigns and automation flows in the same API as transactional email.

Postmark figures come from postmarkapp.com/eu-privacy, /pricing, /message-streams, /inbound-email and /dpa, read on 10 October 2026. If they have changed, the table is wrong, not them: write to [email protected]. On Tratto, each recipient (to, cc or bcc) counts as one email.

The difference that matters: where the data lives

“Postmark's primary data and servers are hosted at Deft's data center (located outside of Chicago), and Amazon Web Services (AWS). We currently don't have plans to add servers in the EU.”

Postmark's position, on the same page, is that GDPR does not require servers in the EU: transfers are covered by its data processing agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses. That is a legitimate route, and for many teams it is enough. Tratto takes the other one: the data is stored in EU regions of Google Cloud and AWS, both US-headquartered companies, each named with its region on the sub-processors page. If your customers or your DPO ask for data stored in the EU rather than transferred under contract, that is the whole difference.

Where Postmark is ahead

Track record: Postmark has been sending transactional email for years; Tratto is in private beta. Traffic separation: Postmark runs transactional and broadcast streams on separate infrastructure and IPs, so a campaign cannot weigh on your password resets; Tratto sends both through the same infrastructure today, and dedicated IPs are on the roadmap. Inbound: Postmark parses incoming email and posts it to your webhook; Tratto has no inbound email yet. SMTP is available on Postmark and on Tratto's roadmap. Paperwork: Postmark publishes a DPA, Tratto has not published one yet.

When to choose which

Choose Postmark if you need inbound email, SMTP or a published DPA today, you want transactional traffic isolated from bulk mail at the infrastructure level, and US data storage under contractual safeguards is acceptable to you.

Choose Tratto if EU data storage is a requirement, and you want transactional email, campaigns and automation flows on your contacts in one API, with 3,000 emails a month on the free plan.

Questions

Does Postmark store data in the EU?
Not according to Postmark's EU data protection page: its primary data and servers are at a data center outside Chicago and on AWS, and it has no current plans to add servers in the EU. Transfers are covered by its data processing agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses.
Does Tratto separate transactional and marketing traffic like Postmark's message streams?
Not at the infrastructure level today: both go through the same sending infrastructure. You can set a default sender for each send type (transactional, marketing, automation) and send each from its own verified domain, which keeps domain reputation apart. Dedicated IPs are on the roadmap.
How do the free plans compare?
Postmark's Developer plan is 100 emails a month with no overages, meant for testing. Tratto Free is 3,000 emails a month with 3 custom domains.
Can I move from Postmark to Tratto without changing code?
No. Tratto has its own REST API and SDKs for Node.js, Python and PHP, and no SMTP relay yet, so switching means changing the client code. Inbound email is not available yet either.
