Why We Built Tratto: an Email API With Your Data in the EU

We got tired of legacy SMTP infrastructure and fragmented email tooling. Here's why we built Tratto from scratch, and what changed for our team.

Sending email from a product means taking on work that has nothing to do with your product: domain authentication, bounce handling, suppression lists, and a deliverability story you usually only come to understand after something has already gone wrong.

We built Tratto because we wanted that work to be someone's job once, not every team's job forever.

The Problem We Faced

When we first tried building a serious email product, we hit three walls:

  1. Infrastructure that isn't your product: DKIM records, bounce processing, suppression, reputation. All necessary, none of it the thing you set out to build.
  2. Opaque dashboards: black-box analytics that tell you what happened but not why.
  3. "EU region" that doesn't mean what it sounds like: picking an EU sending region doesn't necessarily mean your data stays in the EU. Resend, for one, documents that "all account data, including email metadata, logs, and API records, is stored in the United States regardless of the sending region you select." (Full comparison.)

The email industry optimizes for volume (marketing operations), not reliability (developers). When you want to send a password reset or an order confirmation, you shouldn't have to rent enterprise infrastructure.
